Purpose of the Thai Alphabet Cards
Most of the elements can be learned individually using the cards. For example, covering up a part of one side of the card and prompting for covered elements (e.g., show the picture and prompt for the written form, show the English meaning and prompt for the Thai word pronunciation, etc.)
Design Goals
The cards have been devise for maximum information density while balancing composition with a focus on the learner who wants to learn how to write and read Thai characters as well as how to pronounce the characters correctly.
In particular, we have innovated in the creation of symbols to indicate various tone, sound, and syllable class rules, as well as the innovation of showing frequency as well as duration of tone in the form of a graph.
Thai Side of Card – ด้านภาษาไทย
- Thai character sound – เสียงของตัวอักษรภาษาไทย
- Thai name of character – ชื่อของพยัญชนะเป็นภาษาไทย
- Thai character with drawing indicators – แบบที่แสดงเส้นนำทางในการเขียนตัวอักษร
- Common handwritten form – รูปแบบของพยัญชนะที่นิยมเขียนเป็นลายมือเขียน
- Color coding of the consonant class – ใช้สีกำกับบอกประเภทของพยัญชนะ
- If the consonant appears in the final position, symbols are used to indicate live (triangle) or dead (circle) syllable – เครื่องหมายบ่งบอกว่าพยัญชนะนี้ถ้าหากเป็นตัวสะกดจะทำให้พยางค์นั้นเป็นคำเป็น หรือ คำตาย
- Also, the sound of the consonant in final position – แม่สะกดต่างๆ ของแต่ละพยัญชนะหากใช้เป็นตัวสะกด
- Symbol of tone rules for the consonant class (first line indicates tone for long vowels, second line indicates tone for short vowels) – สัญลักษณ์บอกเสียงวรรณยุกต์ถ้าใช้ตัวอักษรกับสระเสียงยาวและสระเสียงสั้น
- Drawing illustrating the character name – ภาพวาดที่แสดงชื่อของพยัญชนะ
- Name of consonant class – ชื่อประเภทของพยัญชนะ
- Consonant order number (in Thai numerals) – เลขลำดับของพยัญชนะในภาษาไทยเป็นตัวเลขไทย
English Side of Card – ด้านภาษาอังกฤษ
- Phonetic transcription of Thai sound in English -การออกเสียงพยัญชนะภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ
- Tone frequency and duration graph -กราฟแสดงเสียงสูงต่ำของเสียงพยัญชนะ
- Mouth position diagram -แผนภาพรูปปากขณะออกเสียงพยัญชนะ
- English translation for character name -คำแปลชื่อของพยัญชนะเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ
- Consonant class -ประเภทของพยัญชนะเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ
- Consonant order number (in Arabic numerals) -เลขลำดับของพยัญชนะในภาษาไทยเป็นตัวเลขอราบิค

I bought the flash cards , consonant and vowel 2 days ago, From the Mall Khorat.
I cannot work out the tone system Item 8 / Symbol for tone rules. 1st line indicates tone for long vowels 2nd line for short vowels , presumably same for consonants. I can see what appears to be a clock face with 2 hands of equal length. How do they show a tone rule ? + which is the 1st line ?
สวัสดีครับ I’ve bought the 44 consonants card set, even though I’ve learned already the Thai alphabet, I think they’re quite handy and สนุก! Answering the already long asked question from Mike above… That’s the first time I saw this symbol for the different Thai consonant class (as depicted number 8), there are basically 3 classes of consonants int Thai: * Low class = (e.g. ค) middle tone with live syllable AND high tone (in some case possibly falling tone) with dead syllable * Middle class = (e.g. ก) middle tone with live syllable AND low tone with dead syllable * High class = (e.g. ข) rising tone with live syllable AND low tone with dead syllable To know whether the syllable is live or dead one needs to know the vowel used and possibly the final consonant if present…
